"Sir, - I read with feelings of disgust in Saturday's "North Mail", an interview which one of your foreign correspondents had with an English resident in Portugal on the past and the future affairs of Portugal. He gives a glaring misrepresentation of the real facts os the situation at the time of the revolution. He states that there were no attacks on the convents and monasteries.

On wednesday, October 5th, about 5 o'clock, the massacre of the inmates of the monasteries began. The Lazarist College of Arroios, at Lisbon, was singled out as one of the special objects on which the scum of Lisbon, encouraged and aided by the military "heroes", wrecked their vengeance. The drunken mob burst into the college, after having broken the doors and windows. They first meet in the corridor the Rev. Pere Barros-Gomes, aged 72. They rushed upon him, and one of the mob stabbed him with a poignard, and, not content with this brutality, they beat the aged priest with the butt end of their muskets on the head and chest until death ensured. They then continued their bloody drama by riddling the body of Father Fragues with bullets while he was imploring of them in Portuguese: "For the love of God, do not kill anybody". After this double assassination the band of ruffians dispersed through every part of the college, ransacking, plundering, and smashing everything they could lay their hands on.

The jesuits suffered a greater amount of persecution. Twenty-three of them were incarcerated in a space that could hardly give decent accomodation to three, while now the despots are pursuing the Jesuit beyond the ocean with their animosity. So "politely" were the Good Sisters treated, that one of them, an English lady, had lost her reason.

It was against Christianity that the revolution was directed, planned and executed. By driving the priests out of the country, by eliminating the name of God from the schools, and persecuting religion generally, they consider this the most efficient way to bring into existence as Godless and atheistic. people. This is made manifest by the fact that every member of the dictatorship is a Freemason, and by their subsequent iniquitous laws agains the Church.
